The .BEAM file format is the compiled bytecode format for Erlang (and Elixir) modules, executed by the BEAM virtual machine. It is based on a variant of the "EA IFF 1985" Standard for Interchange Format Files, dividing the file into chunks with 4-byte alignment. The format uses big-endian byte order for integers and pads chunk data to multiples of 4 bytes with zeros if necessary.

The format is binary, chunk-based, and self-describing. Intrinsic properties include:
- File header: 4 bytes magic string 'FOR1', 4-byte big-endian unsigned integer (u32) for the size of the rest of the file (total file size - 8 bytes), 4 bytes identifier 'BEAM'.
- Chunk structure: Repeating sequence of chunks, each with 4-byte ASCII chunk ID (string), 4-byte u32 chunk data size (excluding padding), followed by the data bytes (size bytes), padded with zeros to the next 4-byte boundary if needed.
- Byte order: Big-endian for all multi-byte integers.
- Alignment: All chunks aligned to 4 bytes; sizes are multiples of 4 after padding.
- Chunk independence: Chunks can appear in any order, but typically 'AtU8' or 'Atom' comes early as other chunks reference atom indices.
- Mandatory chunks for a functional module: 'Code', 'ExpT', 'ImpT', 'StrT', 'AtU8' (or 'Atom').
- Optional chunks: Vary based on compilation options (e.g., debug, documentation).
All possible chunk IDs and their structures (properties):
- 'AtU8' (Atoms in UTF-8, modern):
- u32: number of atoms.
- For each atom: u8 length, followed by length bytes of UTF-8 string.
- 'Atom' (Atoms in Latin1, legacy):
- Same structure as 'AtU8', but Latin1 encoding.
- 'Code' (Bytecode):
- u32: information size (usually 28, size - 4).
- u32: instruction set version (usually 0).
- u32: highest opcode used.
- u32: number of labels.
- u32: number of functions.
- Bytecode bytes: sequence of opcodes and operands.
- 'StrT' (String table):
- Raw bytes: concatenated strings, referenced by offset and length from code.
- 'ImpT' (Imports):
- u32: number of imports.
- For each: u32 module atom index, u32 function atom index, u32 arity.
- 'ExpT' (Exports):
- u32: number of exports.
- For each: u32 function atom index, u32 arity, u32 entry label.
- 'LocT' (Locals):
- u32: number of locals.
- For each: u32 function atom index, u32 arity, u32 entry label.
- 'FunT' (Lambda/fun table):
- u32: number of lambdas.
- For each: u32 function atom index, u32 arity, u32 entry label, u32 index, u32 num free variables, u32 old unique ID.
- 'LitT' (Compressed literals):
- u32: uncompressed size.
- Compressed data: zlib-compressed block.
- Uncompressed: u32 number of literals, then for each literal: u32 term size, term size bytes of Erlang external term format binary.
- 'LitU' (Uncompressed literals, rare):
- Same as 'LitT' uncompressed part, without compression.
- 'Attr' (Module attributes):
- Erlang external term format binary (typically a proplist of attributes).
- 'CInf' (Compilation info):
- Erlang external term format binary (list of compilation details like options, version).
- 'Abst' (Abstract code):
- Erlang external term format binary (abstract syntax tree forms).
- 'Dbgi' (Debug info):
- Erlang external term format binary (debug information, possibly encrypted).
- 'Docs' (Documentation):
- Erlang external term format binary (docs_v1 format with module docs and function docs).
- 'Line' (Line information):
- u32: version (usually 0).
- u32: flags.
- u32: number of line instructions.
- u32: number of line items.
- u32: number of filenames.
- Line items: sequence of u32 for lines.
- Filenames: u32 atom index for each filename.
- 'Type' (Type information):
- u32: number of types.
- For each: u32 atom index (function), u32 arity, Erlang term for type spec.
- 'ExCk' (Elixir checker, Elixir-specific):
- Elixir-specific data for code checking.
- Other rare/historical chunks: 'Locl', 'Labl', etc., but not standard in modern BEAM.

Direct downloads of .BEAM files are uncommon as they are typically generated during compilation and not hosted in repositories (often ignored via .gitignore). The following is self-contained HTML code with JavaScript that can be embedded in a Ghost blog post (using the HTML card). It creates a drop zone, reads the .BEAM file as binary, parses the header and chunks, decodes each chunk based on the structures above, and dumps the properties to the screen. For zlib decompression in 'LitT', it uses pako (included via CDN for simplicity). Erlang external term decoding is basic (shows hex for term binaries; full decoder would be too complex for embedded JS).

The following Python class uses struct for unpacking, zlib for 'LitT', and a basic Erlang external term decoder (simplified for common types; full decoder would require a complete implementation). For write, it serializes back the parsed data.
